My time with DNDN

I had several traders ask me today, “When did you get into DNDN and why?” So I thought I’d do some trade analysis.

First of all, I’ve traded DNDN off and on for 2 years and here are some of the highlights. It was 2 years ago this month when Dendreon had a similar announcement that made it pop just like today and retreat, just like today. I missed that one, but bought in the next day about $14 and held it for a week until it got to just shy of $20 and got out with a nice profit.

About a month later, it got a notice from the FDA that it needed more information and DNDN dropped like a rock. It wasn’t until October 2007 that I tried again, buying in at about $8 and it went down from there….and I held on as it went down. It never approached the 8 dollar range again until October of the next year. Another announcement and another pop. DNDN popped to $10 and I sold half of my position at about $9….again holding half thinking this was going to go….but it didn’t

Down it went again. I bought in (yes I doubled-down) at the $4 level, which held for several months. And again it started down. You know of course if I had had stops in I would be out of this long ago….but it was getting personal. I had a love-hate relationship with DNDN. (I think I recall something about trading and emotions) I bought in some more at the $2.60 level and had a cost average of about $3.60 for my DNDN holdings.

It then began its trek up into today. I was very enthusiastic when price crossed up through the 8ema. I got absolutely giddy when the 8ema crossed up through the 34ema. I sold a quarter of my position at about $5 and another quarter at $7, which was yesterday. And then afterhours they halted trading. Oh my god! Not again!

There was nothing I could do now. I actually had a restless night, but hoping for the best.

This morning, I got to my desk and was looking for news. I knew DNDN had scheduled a 9AM conference, but was hoping for news. And it came at 8:30…..

Ahhhhhhh…good news :!: But still halted. I didn’t want to miss this. I figured…what would I be happy with? Okay 3.6 times 5 equals 18 dollars. So I put in a limit sell order for $18.01 and waited for DNDN to open for trading. About 5 minutes later, my computer said “Order filled” and I thought “GREAT!” And then I looked at my order and it got filled at $19.20….wow!

No, I didn’t get the top, but I got a great rate of return and glad to have DNDN off my screen after 2 years. And that’s all there is. I’m a happy trader tonight

Trader’s Parody

Gee, someone composed a song about the “What The $%@&* Trading!” method

It’s a great video with a lot of truth. John Carter from Mastering the Trade is the trader. Enjoy!

Great, but…

This morning was great, gangbusters out of the gate. But, at 2:30, a u-turn and down they came. I thought we may even get into the red….real close for the Nasdaq….the Dow and S&P had more of a cushion, but still ending in the lower half of the range. Not bad overall. Better than expected CPI numbers were the big push, but I’m not sure why the late day sell off. And did you see the VIX get under 17?

Had some good plays (DNDN) (DGLY) (MVIS) and (QTWW), but I was bored after noon. Tomorrow I’m watching (BIOS), (VNDA), (GFG) and (MNKD). Happy Trading :!:

Pulled it out

The indexes kept building all day, and then, just like yesterday, with about 2 hours left in the trading day, they started to crumble. Except this time, they put the brakes on and started back up until closing time. Not a decisive gain, but green is better than red.

A couple of nice movers today were (SIGA) and (AVII). But I only watched (XRM), (DSTI) and (CTDC) make big gains.

Tomorrow I’ll keep and eye on (BCON), (CDL), (SYNM), (NURO), (ORS) and (LOCM).

Red start…

We started down and never turned green, even for a moment. It wasn’t real bad, but you would have thought the indexes would have had a bit more up and down action. (CRY) and (AAV) were winners, as was (IDMI), but (DVAX) gave some of last Friday’s gains back.

(YHOO) dumped in the morning but came back throughout the day, so it didn’t do too bad, down 14%. And (MSFT) didn’t do as well as I thought ending in the red, but it came back after hours.

I haven’t gone through today’s charts yet, so I don’t have any new ones to watch. But maybe by morning ;)

Yeah baby…

…a great day in the market…for me anyway. Tagged a lot of winners today: (CAR) (HYTM) (PGNX) (XRM) and (DCR). It started lousy with some bad reports in housing and durable goods, but some good earnings reports and a great performance by the U.S. Dollar (USD) set off the rise in the stock market. Volume did start to creep up all the way to average :)

The Nasdaq continued its strong move with (AAPL) moving up and (GOOG) having a pretty wild ride, although ending in the red. And that VIX is pretty low, bullish. This exciting week comes to an end tomorrow, so it may be time to take the profits and run. This should be interesting….happy trading :!:

Nice Week!

Two big up days in one week…yeah baby! The Nasdaq and Qs had a big gap up …which held and the Dow and SP500 had nice big candles on increasing volume. Some profit taking at the end of the day, but for an option expiration Friday, it was a great ending!

My plays: I dumped COCO and OPWV early for a gain and got out of KNOT at the 50 ma for 15%. My watchlist from yesterday were all doji’s, but I am holding HYTM over the weekend, along with SSCC and SIGA. Over all a very good week. I hope you had a good one as well :!:

Some more picks…

While 4 of 5 yesterday’s picks are still on the grill, here are a few more I’m going to watch today. Today should at least start like gangbusters, but it is options expiration so we should see a lot of unloading today. Happy Trading.

CIT DIVX HYTM STXS

Oh Well…

The indexes didn’t do much, but the stocks I picked last night were up 4 out of 5. I really thought IBM and EBAY would at least help the tech sector….but no, they didn’t do much for the market and EBAY couldn’t even help itself. And the jobless claims report was a downer. Volume was lagging all day long, but really perked up in the last hour. Dojis all around.

Stocks….EPEX was my only loser, but OPWV, KNOT, SSCC and COCO were winners….I’m holding overnight….and hoping :)

A few I’m looking at….

SSCC OPWV EPEX KNOT COCO sscc.png' title='SSCC Apr 16'>SSCC Apr 16

Here’s a chart for SSCC (click to enlarge). One of my favorite setups is the downtrend reversal and then buying as it crosses the 8 ema.

opwv.png' title='OPWV Apr 16'>OPWV Apr 16 OPWV is a very similar chart, although the downtrend is only 2 weeks long, but a similar premise.

KNOT is also a similar pattern. COCO and EPEX are both bouncing off the 8 ema after a short consolidation. Let’s see how these develop Thursday.

Slithering down

The Nasdaq and the Qs took it on the chin today, down over 1%…while the S&P was down 0.8% and the Dow was the least stinky at 0.39% We found support just shy of the halfway point of last Tuesday’s big candles.

Is was a losing day trading for me with CROX AVR VNDA. My only winner continues to be MVIS. I saw some rumors that AAPL may like the MVIS products for the iPhone.

Technically….yuck! The major averages broke thru my favorite 8EMA, but are still above their 20 day and 50 day moving averages. Looking at the stochastics, I see a snap back up tomorrow (that means hoping).

Aaargh! Total frustration……happy trading to all!

WOW, Panic coming in…

Black Friday? Markets collapsing…Bear Stearns cut in half! Man oh man, it’s here

Revised: 10 minutes later……
Plunge Protection Team has stepped in. Fast 100 point recovery and still moving up. Now looking for a doji day.
